5-star Salyer talks Clemson

Perhaps the most impressive performer at The Opening Atlanta Regional at Buford High School on Sunday was Jamaree Salyer.

The five-star offensive guard from Atlanta (Ga.) Pace Academy dominated during 1-on-1s and earned an invitation to The Opening Finals, showing the skills that have him rated as the nation’s top guard and one of the top overall prospects in the 2018 class.

The Clemson Insider attended the event and caught up with Salyer to talk about Clemson and his recruitment.

When does he plan to be back in Tigertown, and what does he hope to get out of his next visit?

“Hopefully for the spring game,” Salyer said. “Just being able to see the atmosphere again. I haven’t been for a game yet, so kind of get a little preview of the game-day atmosphere.”

Salyer (6-4, 325) last visited Clemson on March 10 to watch one of the Tigers’ spring practices.

“Just to see how those guys work,” Salyer said of why he visited. “Just being able to see how they practice, how they structure their practice, the intensity and things like that.”

Cartersville (Ga.) five-star Clemson quarterback commitment Trevor Lawrence was also on campus then and was able to chop it up with Salyer.

“Trevor was just telling me to make a good decision,” Salyer said. “Just telling me why he picked the place, saying the people make Clemson, and I believe that’s true.”

Previously, Salyer visited for Clemson’s elite junior day in January, when he got his first look at the new football complex.

“It’s great. It looks pretty,” he said. “It’s one of the best I’ve seen in the country, so just getting to see that and being able to experience that was pretty cool.”

Salyer said that of Clemson’s coaching staff members, he has a particularly strong relationship with offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell and co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott.

“They’re just straightforward,” Salyer said of what he likes about the two coaches. “They’ll be honest with you. They’ll tell you how they feel, what they think you can play, what they think you can do, how to work on your weaknesses and how to rely on your strengths. They’re good to you.”

Their recruiting pitch, Salyer said, is simple.

“The people make Clemson,” he said.

Salyer is looking to drop a list of his top six or seven schools in late May or early June. He said he plans to commit “probably” after the season.

He reiterated that Clemson is in strong standing with him.

“Definitely one of my top schools,” he said.

What stands out to him most about Clemson?

“Just how good the environment is,” Salyer said. “They have strong morals. They’re good morals. They believe in doing the right thing, and that’s cool. I like that.”

Salyer is rated by Rivals.com as the No. 1 offensive guard, No. 2 prospect in Georgia and No. 9 overall prospect in the 2018 class.
