Instant Replay: Clemson 8, Furman 0

The Clemson Insider looks back at Clemson’s 8-0 win over Furman on Tuesday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

What happened?

The Paladins (11-12) threatened first as they had runners on second and third with only one out in the second inning, but a strikeout and ground ball ended the threat. The Tigers (21-4) bounced back in the bottom of the frame as Andrew Cox led off with a walk, stole second, and came in to score on a Weston Jackson RBI double. Clemson doubled their lead in the fourth as Logan Davidson led off with a single and advanced on a passed ball before Grayson Byrd hit a two-out RBI single to make it 2-0. In the sixth, the Tigers stretched the lead to 4-0 on a Jackson solo homer and a RBI single from Jordan Greene. Clemson put the game away in the seventh as again they had some two out magic. Cox and Davidson hit back-to-back singles before Jackson hit his second homer of the game, a three-run shot, to make it 7-0. The Tigers capped off the scoring in the eighth on a solo homer from Seth Beer.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the second inning. Furman looked like they may be in business with two runners in scoring position and only one out but Tyler Jackson stepped up with a big strikeout and a ground out to keep the Paladins off the board. Clemson pushed a run across in the bottom of the frame for all the runs they would need and Furman would not get a runner to third again the rest of the game.

What went right?

Three pitchers (T. Jackson, Ryan Miller, and Mitchell Miller) combined for a five-hit shutout, the Tigers third straight shutout as a pitching staff. The offense came alive with 12 hits, led by Weston Jackson’s 3-for-4 day with five RBI. Beer, Davidson, and Byrd also contributed two hits each.

What went wrong?

Overall, Clemson played a pretty good game. The did commit two errors and strand nine runners, but were able to work through that to pick up their seventh game in a row.
