Clemson’s football team concludes spring practices today with the annual Orange & White Spring Game at 2:30 p.m. at Death Valley.
With the Tigers having to replace stars such as quarterback Deshaun Watson, running back Wayne Gallman, wide receivers Mike Williams and Artavis Scott, tight end Jordan Leggett, center Jay Guillermo, linebacker Ben Boulware, defensive tackle Carlos Watkins, cornerback Cordrea Tankersley and safety Jadar Johnson there are plenty of position battles to keep an eye on.
Here are the five things to look for in today’s game.
Who has the best day at quarterback? Without a doubt this is the one position everyone will be watching today. It is now a three-man race between Kelly Bryant, Zerrick Cooper and Hunter Johnson. Bryant is listed as questionable after injuring his hamstring during a 28-yard run in Wednesday’s mini-scrimmage. But if he does go, keep an eye on how he runs the offense and how he looks in the pocket. Remember, quarterbacks are live today because the coaches want to see how they react to true situations. Cooper and Johnson have both come in the last half of practice especially Cooper, who ended the spring practices with two very good performances in the mini-scrimmages. Johnson has performed well too and has put himself in position to compete for the job when the team begins practice in August.
Does Tavien Feaster show progress? Everyone wants to see Feaster be the Tigers’ new running back. He is the most electric of the three guys competing for the job. We have heard all spring how much he has improved with his running, but we have also heard how he is still struggling with his pass protection. With the quarterbacks live, we will get to see if he is any better at protecting the quarterback, which can tell us a lot on how much we can expect him to play this fall.
How well does Falcinelli line up the offense? The center position is the most important one in Clemson’s offense. It is all about tempo for the Tigers’ offense and the center is the guy, along with the quarterback, that makes it happen. Justin Falcinelli has had a very good spring according to the coaches and this will be the first time fans get a true sense of what he can do. Pay attention to how fast Falcinelli is getting the White offense to the line today and has the offensive line ready to go.
What will we see out of the linebackers? Kendall Joseph has been spending a good amount of time as the weakside linebacker this spring, while Tre Lamar has been in the middle. We should see a lot of that today from both players as well with Chad Smith playing middle linebacker too. Also keep a look out for Shaq Smith and see where he mostly lines up today which could give us an idea on where he will play this fall. We have heard how Shaq Smith has improved this spring and today will be our first time to get a good look at him since last year’s spring game.
Is the secondary really as good as we hear? We have heard all spring how good the secondary has been and this will be the first time we will get to see how good they really are. We will get to see K’Von Wallace at corner, Tanner Muse at safety, Isaiah Simmons at safety and Trayvon Mullen at corner. Of course there is still Ryan Carter and Marcus Edmond in the mix as well. The only guy we will not see playing is Mark Fields, who is out with a turf toe injury he has been dealing with since the national championship game. With all the talent the Tigers have at wide receiver, it should be a good matchup in the spring and fun to watch especially with the teams split up.
