ROEBUCK, S.C. — Practice for the 81st-annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas all-star game began on Monday at Dorman High School in Roebuck, S.C.
A couple of Clemson’s commitments are among the participants — Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe four-star athlete Derion Kendrick and Central (S.C.) Daniel four-star linebacker Jake Venables — while one of the game’s headliners is five-star Clemson defensive end target K.J. Henry of Clemmons (N.C.) West Forsyth.
The Clemson Insider was on hand for the first practice session Monday morning. Here are some notes from what we saw:
— Kendrick and Venables were both sporting Clemson gloves during the first practice.
— Kendrick was wearing a towel with what appeared to be a tribute written on it: “LONG LIVE BACK WOOD 6-25-17”
— Henry was rocking long-sleeved camouflage gear underneath his jersey. Interestingly, Henry was wearing Alabama gloves despite not making his planned official visit to Tuscaloosa over the weekend.
— The best quarterback on South Carolina’s team did not get any action at quarterback during the first practice. While South Carolina quarterback commit Dakereon Joyner struggled with accuracy on several occasions, Kendrick — who led South Pointe to a state title this season as the team’s starting QB — played receiver during the first session and even saw a couple of snaps at running back.
— Kendrick lined up mostly at slot receiver. It’s clear that the South Carolina squad’s gameplan will revolve heavily around Kendrick, who got a lot of touches during the team portion of the practice. He was targeted several times and also given the ball on end-arounds and handoffs out of the backfield.
— After being forced out of bounds on one of his runs, Kendrick looked at the offensive linemen and said, “Y’all got to get big right there!” Kendrick is fun to watch. He plays with a ton of energy and intensity, and he isn’t afraid to talk some smack.
— We were impressed by Kendrick’s sharp route-running, especially considering he played quarterback this season. Kendrick told us that’s something he has been working on daily.
— Henry was getting reps at outside linebacker, the position he played for West Forsyth this season.
— Clemson’s newest commitment, Roebuck (S.C.) Dorman offensive lineman Jordan McFadden, had planned to play in the Shrine Bowl before injuring his knee during Dorman’s state title game recently. We did not see McFadden at the first practice session but had a chance to talk with Dorman’s offensive line coach. We will have more on McFadden in tonight’s Insider Report.
