Shrine Bowl Insider: Second practice session

Practice for the 81st-annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas began on Monday at Dorman High School in Roebuck, S.C. The all-star game features the top players from South Carolina and North Carolina.

A couple of Clemson’s commitments are among the participants — Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe four-star athlete Derion Kendrick and Central (S.C.) Daniel four-star linebacker Jake Venables — while one of the game’s headliners is five-star Clemson defensive end target K.J. Henry of Clemmons (N.C.) West Forsyth.

The Clemson Insider was on hand for each of the two practice sessions Monday. In case you missed it here is our Insider from the morning workout.

Here are some notes from what we witnessed during the afternoon workout:

— Kendrick led South Pointe to its fourth consecutive state championship this season as the team’s starting quarterback but worked out primarily at receiver, his future college position, during both of the Shrine Bowl practices. Kendrick was in the spotlight on South Carolina’s side of things as he seemingly had the ball in his hands all day. Based off what we saw the game plan for South Carolina squad is evidently to get Kendrick a lot of touches in a variety of ways. He was targeted a lot from the slot receiver position and also took handoffs out of the backfield and on end-arounds.

— Kendrick showed off his electric ability and elusiveness throughout the day. The defensive backs he went up against had a tough time keeping up with his speed. Early in the second practice session, Kendrick made an impressive one-handed grab. Later, he had another nice reception when he hauled in a pass of about 25 yards near the sideline in bounds.

— Kendrick doesn’t have a lot of game experience at receiver due to playing quarterback for South Pointe, but he’s clearly put in a lot of practice time there. He displayed good hands and ran crisp routes. Kendrick will fit in nicely with the likes of Tee Higgins and Amari Rodgers at Clemson in the future. Kendrick is similar to Deon Cain in that both played quarterback in high school. Once Kendrick gets to Clemson and gains a better understanding of the nuances of the position, watch out.

— Venables got a lot of reps at middle linebacker and looked really good with his footwork and balance during linebacker drills. He has a stout build and looks as if he has put on a few pounds since we saw him play in September as part of our Tour of Champions series.

— It doesn’t take long to notice Henry on the field with his frame and physicality. He’s quick, fluid and was fun to watch.

— We spotted Henry wearing Alabama gloves today despite not making his planned official visit to Tuscaloosa over the weekend. We asked Henry about his choice of apparel after the second session, and he told us he plans to wear a different pair of team gloves each day.
