Turnovers prove to be costly in Tigers’ loss

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Clemson made a strong second half surge at No. 14 North Carolina Tuesday at the Deon Smith Center, but in the end the Tar Heels made enough plays to hold off the 18th-ranked Tigers’, 87-79.

The win lifted UNC’s record-streak over the Tigers to 59-0, the longest such streak of its kind in any sport.

Clemson (15-3, 4-2 ACC) had an opportunity to win the game with a little more than six minutes to play after making 15 straight shots at one point. However, the Tigers went 3-for-12 down the stretch from the field as North Carolina pulled away late.

The Tigers were led by Marcquise Reed’s 21 points. He scored 19 in the second half and was 7-of-9 from the field. Shelton Mitchell added 18 points and had four assists, while Elijah Thomas scored 16 and had six rebounds.

Gabe DeVoe scored 11 points, which all came in the first half.

Ultimately, 15 turnovers did the Tigers in. Reed had seven of those 15 turnovers.

Clemson head coach Brad Brownell spoke to the media following the game.
