ATLANTA — The start of Sunday’s game at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta looked like a continuation of Tuesday night’s loss at No. 2 Virginia for Clemson.

The Tigers fell behind seven points early and by as many 12 in the first half. However, unlike the game at Charlottesville, No. 17 Clemson eventually got things going on offense and eventually had to hold off Georgia Tech, 72-70.

Marcquise Reed made a driving layup with 24 seconds to play for the game-winner. Tech’s Josh Okogie had a chance to tie the game with under 10 seconds to play, but his shot bounced hard off the glass and out of bounds to Clemson with 4.5 seconds to play.

Reed’s one-and-one rolled off the rim with 3.6 seconds to play, but Tech was unable to get the final shot off before the horn sounded.

Led by Gabe DeVoe’s 25 points, a career-high for the senior, Clemson improved to 17-4 and 6-3 in the ACC. The Tigers’ 6-3 mark is just the ninth time in school history they have started a year 6-3 in ACC play.

Reed scored all 13 of his points in the second half, including the game-winner. Shelton Mitchell finished the game with 17 points.

Behind DeVoe’s 18 first half points, Clemson rallied from a 12-point deficit to cut Tech’s lead to two points by half time, 38-36.

DeVoe connected on 7-of-9 shots in the first half and had four triples on five attempts. The senior went on runs of 9-0 and 7-0 by himself to get Clemson back in the game both times.

Toward the end of the first half, Mitchell got into the act as he made 3-of-5 triples and tallied 12 points in the opening 20 minutes.

The Tigers were 7-of-13 from behind the arc in the first half. Tech came into the game leading the ACC in three-point defense and held Florida State, the league leader in attempts, to just 13 the entire game the last time out.

Clemson has a quick turnaround and will host North Carolina at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night at Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson.
