Instant Replay: No. 11 Clemson 12, Furman 4

The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 11 Clemson’s 12-4 win over Furman on Tuesday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.  

 

 

What happened?

The Tigers (4-0) struck first with an unusual sequence in the third inning. Logan Davidson led off the inning by reaching on a passed ball after striking out. He would move around to third on a single and wild pitch before coming in to score on a sac fly by Chris Williams.

The Paladins (3-1) would answer right back and tie the game on back-to-back hits in the fourth to make it 1-1. Clemson would blow the game open in the middle innings. The Tigers scored four runs in the fifth on a three-run Williams homer and Bryce Teodosio RBI single to make it 5-1.

Clemson added two more runs in the sixth on a RBI double by Robert Jolly and a RBI single from Drew Donathan. The Tigers topped off their scoring with a five-run seventh as Seth Beer had a sac fly to bring in a run, Williams drove in two on a double, and Justin Hawkins launched a two-run homer off the batter’s eye to make it 12-1.

Furman plated two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to make it 12-4, but could get no closer as Clemson won their 18th straight game in the series.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the fifth inning. The Tigers broke open a 1-1 tie by scoring four runs on three hits to get the offense rolling as they would score 11 unanswered runs over three innings.

What went right?

Clemson’s offense got on track. The Tigers totaled 12 runs on 13 hits, six walks, and two HBPs. Seven starters recorded at least one hit while eight starters scored at least one run.

Patrick Cromwell had a game-high three hits while Williams drove in a game-best six runs. Ryan Miller was stellar out of the bullpen, tossing three scoreless innings and Mitchell Miller added a perfect inning in the seventh as well. 

What went wrong?

The Tigers started a little slow again, but woke up in a big way. The pitching staff did issue five walks in the contest.
