Wharton’s bombs lift Tigers over Dallas Baptist

CLEMSON, SC –  Drew Wharton hit two home runs Saturday afternoon leading the Tigers to a 9-1 victory over No. 10 Dallas Baptist in the first game of a doubleheader.  The senior, who had not hit a home run in his career with the Tigers until this series, now has three.  Clemson took the series with the win and go for the sweep in game three.

Brooks Crawford had a strong outing for the Tigers going 5.0 innings and only giving up three hits, no runs and five strikeouts.  Crawford didn’t give up a hit after the leadoff batter in the second.  Spencer Strider pitched the final three innings for Clemson and gave up two hits and one run.

In the second inning Clemson took control of the game early.  Chris Williams walked before Robert Jolly singled to advance Williams to third.  Drew Wharton homered to left center scoring Williams and Jolly.  With one out Bryce Teodosio hit a solo home run.  After the second the Tigers led 4-0.

Clemson added four more in the third.  Seth Beer and Patrick Cromwell both walked to start the inning.  With one out both runners advanced on a wild pitch.  Jolly singled to right scoring Beer.  Wharton hit another home run to score Cromwell and Jolly.  The Tigers led 8-0 after three.

Dallas Baptist loaded the bases in the seventh, but could only manage one run.

Clemson added an insurance run in the seventh.  With two outs Kyle Wilkie singled off the left field wall.  Logan Davidson singled to right center and Wilkie came around to score.

With the win the Tigers moved to 6-0 on the season.  The final game of the series also be played on Saturday.
