Coach Speak: Baylon Spector

Hal Lamb has utilized Baylon Spector’s talent in a variety of ways over the last few years at Calhoun High School.

En route to last seasons’ Georgia AAA state championship, Spector (6-2, 205) played multiple positions on both sides of the ball.

TheClemsonInsider recently spoke with Lamb for his thoughts on the three-star, No. 25 ranked safety (247) in the class of 2017.

What kind of a player is Clemson going to be getting next year, when he gets up there?

Lamb: “Baylon, I think he’s a very, very good football player. He’s a physical kid. He can run. He loves to hit and he’s a tremendous athlete. And he’s an even better person off the field, so Clemson is definitely getting a very good player and a kid.”

Y’all have used him in a variety of ways, what do you think allows him to be so versatile for you guys? Does that go back to what you were saying?

Lamb: “We’ve played him at free safety. We’ve played him at strong safety. We’ve played him at corner. He’s a very smart kid. He’s very versatile. Believe it or not, he’s probably going to be our starting quarterback this year, too. That’s the kind of athlete he is. He’s really a really good athlete that can run. He understands the game. After a few practices, he picks up on whatever we need for him to do. The last two years, he’s really been versatile for us, as far as playing wide receiver, corner, free safety and outside linebacker.”

I’ve seen a few of his highlights playing quarterback, hit looks to me like he could probably play that position at some level in college, too, if he really wanted to put in the time.

Lamb: “He could. He couldn’t do that at Clemson, but at a smaller school he could, for sure. He is a very good quarterback, even though he’s repping so many other positions — he didn’t get to rep much quarterback as a backup the last two years, so we’re really looking forward to him taking the role at quarterback this year. I’m very happy that he’s already committed to Clemson. That is a good situation for him and Clemson.”

He’s told me they see him playing the strong-side linebacker spot. How do you think he’ll fit into that and how he’ll translate when he’s playing that position?

Lamb: “He’ll be fine at that position. It’s similar to what we’ve had him at, as far as an outside linebacker. He’ll be fine. The reason he’ll be fine is he picks up on stuff very fast, and he’s a very physical player. He likes to mix it up and he likes contact, so that’s not going to phase him at all.”

Off the field, what kind of a guy is he?

Lamb: “He’s really a down-to-earth guy. He’s very easy to get along with. His peers like him. He’s level-headed. He’s just a good young man.”
