There is a reason why Dabo Swinney is able to keep his football staff intact. He makes sure they are paid well.
The Clemson Board of Trustees approved a pay raise for every member of Swinney’s coaching staff on Friday as well as other staff personnel. In all, the Clemson football coaches, excluding Swinney, will make a combined $5.3 million this coming academic year, which is an increase of more than a million dollars from the previous year.
Last year, Clemson paid its coaching staff $4.215 million.
Swinney is expected to get a raise as well. As The Clemson Insider reported back on Jan. 7, Swinney has been in talks with athletic director Dan Radakovich about a new agreement that could make Clemson’s head football coach one of the 10 highest paid coaches in the game with a salary in the neighborhood of at least $5 million.
Defensive coordinator Brent Venables, who received a significant pay raise in 2015 to become one of the highest paid assistant coaches in college football, had is salary increase from $1.35 million to $1.425 million. Venables is still considered one of the top 5 highest paid coordinators in the country.
After helping a Clemson offense that averaged 514.5 yards and 38.5 points per game on ts way to the College Football Playoff Championship Game in 2015, co-offensive coordinators Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott saw their salaries increase from $400,000 last year to $625,000 this season. They are now the second highest paid coaches on Swinney’s staff.
Co-defensive coordinator and defensive ends coach Marion Hobby received an $85,000 pay raise as he is now making $500,000 a year, while offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell is making $465,000 a year – a $110,000 raise.
Defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks got a $95,000 raise and is making $450,000 a year, while tight ends coach Danny Pearman received an $80,000 raise and is making $435,000 annually. Mike Reed, who coaches the secondary, received a $90,000 raise and is now making $400,000 a year.
Brandon Streeter, who helped quarterback Deshaun Watson win the Davey O’Brien and Manning Awards as the nation’s best quarterback, received a $100,000 raise and is now making $375,000 a year.
It also needs to be noted that strength and conditioning coach Joey Batson received a raise as did football operation directors and staffers Woody McCorvey, Brad Scott, Thad Turnipseed, Mike Dooley, Jeff Davis and Daniel Bassett.
