Xavier Kelly moves to Clemson in two months, and he’ll arrive with some pretty sizable expectations for year one.
The four-star defensive end from Wichita-East (Kansas) recently spoke with The Clemson Insider about his most recent trip to Clemson and what he hopes to accomplish as a freshman.
How was your trip back down to Clemson for the spring game?
Kelly: “It’s always good going back to Clemson and I had a good time hanging out with the commits, talking to the coaches. We looked really good out there. I’m just glad to be a part of it. I can’t wait to get there in June.”
What are your goals for year one?
Kelly: “I hope to be able to contribute early and be a factor early, help the team do some great things when I first get there.”
When you were talking with coach (Brent) Venables and coach (Marion) Hobby, was that something you discussed? Coming in and helping out early?
Kelly: “Coach Venables was just telling me it’s really just the plays, learning the plays and learning the system. They think, physically, I’m ready to play. It just comes down to if I’m mentally ready. I’m physically ready, but I just need to get mentally ready. It all comes down to me learning the system.”
What are the big dates you have in front of you, before you leave for school?
Kelly: “May 19, I graduate. June 11 — my dad lives in Savannah, Ga. — I’m going to fly down to Savannah and we’re going to do some school shopping and stuff. June 19 is the move in to dorm date at Clemson. We’re just going to drive up to Clemson and go from there.”
