CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Derion Kendrick could be the top overall prospect from the state of South Carolina’s loaded 2018 class.
The athlete from Rock Hill does a little bit of everything for South Pointe High School: quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back. At The Opening last month, Kendrick worked out as a wide receiver. That’s where Clemson area recruiter Jeff Scott is recruiting Kendrick to play for the Tigers.
Kendrick spoke with TheClemsonInsider about his March visit to Clemson for Junior Day, his future position and more.
How was the Junior Day?
Kendrick: “That went good. I got to watch them practice.”
What stood out to you during practice?
Kendrick: “I don’t really play offensive line, but they were getting physical. And, also, the offense, the way they were flowing.”
Offensive line, really? What impressed you about them, besides being physical?
Kendrick: “Because I play quarterback, too, so I give them props, because they do most of the work.”
What did you see out of the receivers, DBs, quarterbacks, who stood out, besides Deshaun Watson?
Kendrick: “Mike Williams, he runs his routes hard, every play, so that really stood out to me.”
How about talking with the coaches? What was it like spending time with them again?
Kendrick: “I just felt like I was at home.”
Coach Scott, does he still say he wants you to play receiver for him? Or does he say he just wants to get you there?
Kendrick: “He wants me to play receiver.”
In the past, you’ve said DB is where you wanted to play at the next level, is that still the case?
Kendrick: “I’m kind of even.”
How would you describe yourself as a player?
Kendrick: “All over the place.”
Do a little bit of everything?
Kendrick: “Yes, sir.”
