Already a veteran

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Things are going to start getting hectic for Xavier Thomas.

In April of last year, when he was a freshman at Florence-Wilson, Florida State was first to offer. A few weeks later, TCI stopped by the high school for a first-hand look.

Everyone else has since jumped on board — reporters and college coaches alike. Now, a few weeks before the end of his sophomore year, Thomas is a veteran when it comes to this recruiting stuff.

“Well, I just took it slowly,” he said, when asked about handling the attention. “The older I get I just need to work even harder.”

Thomas will hit the road for some visits this summer, “probably for camps.” The five-star recruit wants to keep getting better.

“I have a couple of schools. I haven’t really set out my schedule yet, but I plan on going to Clemson again and Florida State. I’m going to try to make it to Alabama also,” he said.

Clemson hosted him for a pair of Junior Days this spring, most recently for the spring game. South Carolina’s also had him on campus a couple of times in 2016.

For Thomas, there’s plenty to like about Clemson.

“Just the fact that coach (Dabo) Swinney takes out his time to talk to me,” he said. “The players talk to me when I’m there and tell me why they came to Clemson, then I picture myself going there. Coach Swinney always tells me that it’s not just about football. It’s about developing as a man in life and life after football.”
