What we heard: Clemson 8, Furman 0

Clemson’s 8-0 victory over Furman on Tuesday evening served as the third consecutive shutout the fifth-ranked Tigers have had this season, a first for the program since 1992. The win brings the team to an incredible 21-4 record so far with the Tigers on a seven-game winning streak.

Here is what we heard:

“I’m very impressed with our team,” head coach Monte Lee said after victory.“Three consecutive shutouts now, just an unbelievable job by our pitching staff, Coach (Andrew) See, (Tyler) Jackson … he has been very consistent. He was very good for us again tonight. The bullpen was good. Ryan Miller and Mitchell Miller both threw the ball very well. We only had one walk on the night. Defensively, quite honestly I thought we played really, really well.”

Although he is excited by the success, Lee encourages his team to use the streak as a way to continue to improve by inspecting what is working well.

“Regardless of how well we are playing right now, we can’t lose sight of the fact that we have to show up every day and work extremely hard and play extremely hard regardless of the opponent and regardless of the streak that we are on,” Lee said. “We are not really talking about the streak. We are talking about what we are doing well.”

One of the strongest assets of this season’s team has been pitching. Tyler Jackson earned the win over Furman after spending 6 2/3 innings on the mound, giving up no runs, five hits, only one walk, while striking out four batters.

“We have pitched very well all year,” Lee said. “The expectations on the pitching staff are so high right now and the competitive level between the pitchers. Every guy that comes in there, he knows what the standard is and he wants to come in there and try to stay in the ballgame because we have some many options out of the bullpen so those guys don’t want me coming out there so they are really, really competing regardless of the score.”

Five of Clemson’s eight runs were brought in by Weston Jackson who went 3-for-4 at the plate including two home runs.

“That was nice. I don’t think I have ever had a five-RBI game in my college career,” Jackson said. “I try not to ride emotions as much because baseball will humble you very quick. We are on fire right now. Everyone in the dugout is loose. We know any pitcher that goes out there is going to put up some zeros or get some quick outs. It is easy I guess to get into a rhythm offensively as well.”
