On NFL Network’s Path to The Draft, Clemson overwhelming was voted by fans as Wide Receiver University, which was no surprise to former Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams, who was a guest on the show Friday evening.
Clemson beat out LSU, Alabama and Ohio State by taking 49 percent of the vote. LSU, who has Odell Beckham playing for the Giants, took second with 20 percent, while Alabama (16%) was third and Ohio State (15%) was fourth.
“There was never a doubt,” Williams said confidently when they revealed the poll’s results. “Bama has who, Julio?”
Of course Williams pointed out DeAndre Hopkins (Texans), Sammy Watkins (Bills), Martavis Bryant (Steelers) and Adam Humphries (Tampa Bay) are all from Clemson. He accidently forgot to bring up Charone Peake (Jets) and Jaron Brown (Arizona) who are also playing in the league.
Williams also talked up another Clemson receiver who could make that list one day real soon.
“Hunter Renfrow has a little movement going on with Renfrow Nation so he is pretty good back in Clemson,” Williams said.
Renfrow of course caught the Tigers’ game-winning catch with one second left to beat Alabama in the National Championship Game on Jan. 9.
Williams is less than a month from being added to that prestigious list. The former Clemson star is projected to be a top 15 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. In the interview, Williams says he looks like an A.J. Green, Alshon Jeffery and Dez Bryant kind of receiver.
“Big physical receivers that can go up and attack the deep balls,” he said.
Because the Tigers had to beat teams like Alabama, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Florida State and Louisville to win the national championship, Williams said it helped him get prepared for some of what he will see in the NFL.
“The talent we played every week at Clemson … We played Florida State. We played great DBs,” he said. “We faced Ohio State … we faced great DBs and facing those DBs helped me get prepared for the situation I have in front of me.”
Williams indicated it was also great to have a quarterback like Deshaun Watson leading the way. The 6-foot-3, 218-pound receiver says his former quarterback will be a great player for an NFL team.
“He is a great player on and off the field,” Williams said. “He comes to work every day. He comes to practice to work every day. He has the same mentality he has in games that he has in practice that led us to a national championship.”
