Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco linebacker Spencer Lytle had been talking with Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables for about a month.
Then, last Thursday, Venables informed the standout 2019 prospect of a scholarship offer from the Tigers.
“I was asked to call Coach Venables after he spoke to my coach,” Lytle told The Clemson Insider. “We’ve been communicating for a while. He had a great conversation with my coach prior to my call.”
Lytle (6-3, 215) has close to 40 offers in tow as a junior. He has also picked up offers from Arizona State, California, Louisville, Nebraska, Ole Miss, TCU, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Virginia thus far this calendar year.
Despite the volume of offers that have come his way, Lytle wasn’t any less excited to add Clemson to his list. In fact, Clemson checks all of the boxes for him.
“I was extremely pumped getting offered by Clemson,” he said. “Big-time program that meets all the criteria I look for in a program and school.”
Lytle now intends to make the long-distance trip to check out Clemson in the near future.
“100 percent will be visiting Clemson the week after Easter (Sunday),” he said.
Lytle will be accompanied by his parents on the visit.
“Coach Venables and my entire family got on the phone the day after the offer to talk about Clemson and the opportunity,” Lytle said. “My parents will be making the trip with me in April.”
As a junior in 2017, Lytle tallied 77 tackles, including seven for loss and three sacks. He also had nine quarterback hurries and a caused fumble.
“They like that I am a long, versatile, athletic player,” Lytle said of what appeals to the Tigers about his skill set. “They like the way I strike the ball carrier, finish and cover ground in open space. Coach also commented on my overall game intelligence on film.”
Lytle would ideally like to commit this summer but said that may not happen until September as there are a few schools he is hoping to officially visit in the fall.
Proximity to California may not be as big of a factor in his recruitment as it might seem. Lytle was born in Florida before he and his family moved to California. His grandfather is from Asheville, N.C., and he has family that live not too far from Clemson.
Lytle is ranked as the No. 24 outside linebacker nationally by Rivals.
