The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 7 Clemson’s 8-7 walkoff win over No. 23 South Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium to win the three-game series.
Clemson has now defeated the Gamecocks four straight years, the first time that has occurred since the 1986-’89 era.
What happened?
The Tigers (10-1) struck early as Patrick Cromwell hit an opposite field homer in the first for a 1-0 lead. Clemson added two runs in the third on a Chris Williams RBI single and a RBI groundout from Robert Jolly to make it 3-0. The Tigers doubled their lead in the fourth on a RBI double by Logan Davidson and a two-run hit by Cromwell extended the score to 6-0.
The Gamecocks (7-5) cut the lead to 6-3 in the fifth on a three-run homer and added another run in the sixth to make it 6-4. Davidson launched a solo homer to lead off the sixth to push the lead to 7-4, but South Carolina added a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to tie the game at 7-7.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jolly drew a one-out walk before Drew Wharton lined a walkoff triple over the right fielder to give Clemson the 8-7 win to clinch the series.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game had several big momentum swings with Clemson taking advantage early and South Carolina seizing momentum late. The Tigers pulled it out in the end as two seniors, Jolly and Wharton, provided the winning combo in the bottom of the ninth.
What went right?
Clemson jumped to a quick and early lead with six runs in the first four innings. Cromwell led all hitters with three hits while also driving in three runs while Davidson and Justin Hawkins each had two hits. The offense totaled 11 hits (five extra-base hits) in the game and also drew seven walks.
What went wrong?
The Tigers committed three errors in the contest while blowing a 6-0 lead. Clemson pitching staff allowed 10 hits (five for extra bases) while walking six batters.
