Clemson opened the game with a strong start, taking a 3-0 lead over Virginia as B.T. Potter hit a 47-yard field goal with 13:24 remaining in the first quarter. The drive went 19-yards on five plays.

After Lyn-J Dixon took the opening kick off 52-yards, quarterback Trevor Lawrence took a first down carry for 15-yards putting the Tigers in field goal position.
