CLEMSON — Dabo Swinney says they are watching Cade Klubnik grow up right before their eyes.
Clemson’s head coach said after practice Wednesday that the sophomore quarterback has slowly progressed as the season has gone along and is playing with more poise and confidence with each week.
In last week’s game against No. 5 Florida State, Klubnik completed 25-of-38 passes for 283 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions.
“He made a couple of really good checks. He made some big time plays with his legs, in particular the one down the left sideline, there. He escaped pressure,” Swinney said. “You just see where he is a problem. He can really put some pressure on a defense with his ability to move the chains.”
Klubnik’s performance against the Seminoles was the second straight game in which in played cleanly in the passing game. He was 16-of-27 for 169 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions against Florida Atlantic.
“I thought he made some really good decisions,” Swinney said. “Some good runs, which that is an area where we have seen a ton of growth from that first game. We felt like he left a lot of meat on the bone in that aspect of his game.”
Klubnik gained 38 yards using his legs against FSU, though 28 were taken away due to three sacks. For the year, he has gained 144 yards and scored two touchdowns on the ground.
He also has thrown for 976 yards and nine more scores, while completing 96 of his 145 attempts. Just two of those passes have been intercepted this season.
“He has made some big-time reads and accurate throws and just his overall command and leadership. His poise, right before our eyes, is getting better and better each week.”
Klubnik and the Tigers will try to get back on track Saturday when they head to Syracuse to take on the Orange at noon.
