CLEMSON – Clemson punter Aidan Swanson had himself a game last Saturday despite Clemson falling to No. 5 Florida State in overtime.
Swanson, a 6-foot-3 redshirt senior, averaged 53.2 yards on four punts in the game against the Seminoles and had a 62-yard punt in the fourth quarter.
Head coach Dabo Swinney spoke on his performance and said, “He has been really consistent for us and I am really proud of him.”
His performance in the Florida State game landed him a spot in the record books as the first Clemson punter in school history to make multiple 60-yard punts in the same game.
Last year, Swanson averaged 42.3 yards in 62 punts, but had a net of just 38.6 yards. That is something he worked on improving. So far this year, he is averaging 47.7 yards per punt.
“The difference between me this year and last year is the experience and for me not focusing on the outcome, just staying in the moment and not getting in my head” said Swanson on changes he made during the offseason. “It’s all mental. Experience does come with it, but just remaining confident and believing in yourself goes a long way.”
The kicking group has seen several changes recently including the addition of Jonathan Weitz, who made his first career start in the Florida State game at placekicker.
Weitz made all three of his extra points and a 30-yard field goal against FSU. Unfortunately for the Tigers, he missed on a 29-yard attempt with 1:45 to play in regulation that could have given Clemson the lead at the time.
“I feel confident right now and if I need to get the job done, I’ll put my best foot forward,” Swanson said on the possibility of playing the kicker position, too, if called upon.
The Tigers are on the road this weekend as they travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to face an undefeated Syracuse team at noon.
