Students Express Disappointment in Season

CLEMSON – The Clemson Insider asked Clemson students how disappointed they were with the Tigers after their double overtime loss to Miami last Saturday and with the season overall.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. Clemson’s chances of getting back to the ACC Championship Game to defend its title has all but been eliminated.

–Senior industrial engineering major Preston Pettway is disheartened with the Tigers’ performance so far this season, especially with all the hype that was generated in the offseason. “We need to focus on reducing the plays that change the outcomes of games,” Pettway said. On the bright side, he noted, the team is young, so the future can be more hopeful if the right changes are made.

–Junior finance major Mackenzie Murphy finds it hard to turn on the TV to watch the Tigers these days. “I thought that it couldn’t get worse, but then the Miami game came. Watching us turn the ball over three times and blow a double-digit lead to Miami, who was playing without their starting QB, proved me wrong. It indeed did get worse.”

–Senior history major Derian Richardson thinks it has “One hundred percent it has been a disappointing season so far due to what we heard all summer about how much we have improved.”

–Senior economics major Jack McGregor is not happy with how Clemson’s season has been going so far. He feels disappointed for the players who made a commitment to the program that has failed them thus far. “I think after Week 8, the focus should be changing combinations on offense and finding what works.”

–Senior accounting major Caroline Maggio acknowledged the Tigers have had a rough season, and the loss to Miami in double overtime only added to their downfall. “The team’s offense and defense were both underwhelming. Clemson was outscored 21-3 in the fourth quarter and overtime combined, which is a clear indication that the team is struggling on both sides of the ball.”

–Senior health science major Grant Fuller gave some positive feedback, but also admits he is disappointed with the Tigers. “I’ve been very pleased with how the defense has played all year. They have done their part keeping us in games for four quarters and giving us a chance to win.”

–Senior finance major Bowen Gordon is not happy with Clemson’s performance so far this year, especially on offense. While quarterback Cade Klubnik has made strides since the beginning of the season, Gordon still believes that he is still too timid and not confident enough during big plays.

–Senior accounting major Jake Jones has been very discouraged with the performance of the Tigers this season. “As a longtime Clemson supporter, I have gotten lucky and go into every game thinking we are going to win by twenty points.”

–Senior finance major Ben Escanilla is fed up with Clemson’s season thus far, even going lengths to say that this season has caused him to “slowly stop caring for this team.” In the Trevor Lawrence era, Escanilla had high expectations, but now the Tigers “look like my high school JV team,” he said.
