This Clemson freshman, whom the Tigers are high on, is currently dealing with sickness and away from the team.
True freshman offensive lineman Ian Reed is fighting an illness right now, but head coach Dabo Swinney and company remain excited about his future with the program.
“It’s something that he dealt with kind of growing up with, and then it just kind of came back and he just got sick,” Swinney explained on Tuesday. “He’s been battling it for over a week and his mom’s been up here, but he did get to go home (Monday). So, hopefully he’s on the mend.
“We’re super excited about him, too. We really like Ian. He’s a tough, physical kid. Football’s important to him. I think we nailed it in that class.”
Reed is one of three offensive linemen that the Tigers signed in their 2023 recruiting class, along with two other former four-star prospects in Harris Sewell and Zack Owens. All three enrolled at Clemson in January.
“Thomas (Clemson OL coach Thomas Austin) has done a good job. That was his first recruiting class,” Swinney said. “That’s his first class he’s brought in here, and Ian and Harris Sewell and Zack, really like those guys. And (Austin) kind of came in and finished up with Collin Sadler and Blake Miller (in the 2022 recruiting class). So, I just think we’ve done a good job identifying those guys.”
Reed is a product of Vandegrift High in Austin, Texas, and was ranked as the nation’s No. 174 overall prospect in the 2023 class by Rivals. The 6-foot-6, 325-pounder has played in one game this season, logging 11 snaps in his college debut vs. Charleston Southern.
Swinney said Reed won’t be available to play as the season winds down.
“Again, Ian, he’s a big, tough kid that’s incredibly physical. So, we’ll get him back going,” Swinney said. “But he’s not a guy that’s going to be available for us. He’s one of those guys we gotta get him back rolling, but he’s just been sick for a while.”
