The Clemson Insider caught up with a Tigers cornerback target in the class of 2025 who was on campus earlier this season.
Terrance “Deuce” Edwards of Trinity Episcopal School (Richmond, Va.) received an offer from Clemson this past June, then made his first-ever gameday visit to Death Valley for the Florida Atlantic game on Sept. 16.
Edwards reflected on that experience, gave the latest in his recruitment and much more during an interview with TCI this week.
The atmosphere in Death Valley left a huge impression on the 6-foot-1, 178-pound junior.
“The atmosphere – and especially since Florida Atlantic is not an ACC team or they’re not like a major game, and the fact that basically the whole campus was at that game, they packed the stadium out just for a game like that – was major,” he said. “It just shows that the people on campus care, everybody cares, everybody wants to see Clemson succeed. It’s one of the best college atmospheres out there.”
Clemson cornerbacks coach Mike Reed continues to stay in touch with Edwards, who named Clemson one of the schools he’s hearing the most from right now along with Tennessee, NC State, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Maryland and West Virginia.
As for his relationship with Reed, Edwards said it’s “pretty tight.”
“Whenever I see him, it’s all love. He makes Clemson feel like family,” Edwards said. “Especially when I went up there to the game, I see the way he interacts with his players and he really made all the players feel like they’re one of his own, and that’s something major within a coach that you look forward to as a player.”
Edwards, who lists around 30 total offers, announced a top 12 in August featuring Clemson as well as Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisville, West Virginia, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Penn State, Miami and Maryland.
NC State offered Edwards this month and has entered the mix as a top school for him.
“Right now, I can say NC State made their way up there to the top of the list,” he said. “But those top schools still remain like Clemson, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech and Louisville. But NC State made their way up there.”
Edwards outlined when he’s looking to further trim things down in his recruitment and then ultimately choose his college home.
“I’m going to put out maybe around a top five, top seven soon,” he said. “I think I’m going to commit around January or February, no later than April.”
Edwards said Clemson is “of course” still toward the top of his top group of schools.
“Just everything – the history of Clemson, the coaches,” he said regarding what appeals most to him about the Tigers. “The players, they treat each other like brothers on that team. The coaches treat the players like their own sons, and it’s like a family at Clemson. Everybody’s a family. There’s no one guy bigger than the team, and that’s really something you would love to be a part of.”
Edwards had a strong junior season this year, tallying 33 tackles, three interceptions (including a pick-six), 14 pass breakups and a forced fumble to go with five touchdowns on offense.
“Definitely a physical guy,” he said, describing himself as a defensive back. “I’m willing to lay everything out there. Fearless. Willing to go attack the ball type of DB, non-fearing any receiver DB. Just a football player, man. A guy that loves the game.”
