Clemson Surges into ESPN’s Latest Power Rankings

ESPN released its latest men’s college basketball power rankings on Monday.

The Clemson men’s basketball team (9-0, 1-0 ACC) surged up to No. 14 in ESPN’s power rankings after previously being unranked there.

The Tigers went 2-0 this past week with a pair of victories over teams that were previously undefeated. Clemson beat South Carolina, 72-67, on Wednesday in Littlejohn Coliseum before defeating TCU, 74-66, on Saturday in the Hall of Fame Series Toronto.

Here’s what ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, who authored the power rankings, had to say about Brad Brownell’s team — which is off to its best start since the 2008-09 season:

Clemson handed both of its opponents their first loss of the season this past week, felling South Carolina on Wednesday and TCU on Saturday. Ian Schieffelin continues to emerge as a consistent option for Brad Brownell, going for 14 points, 9 boards and 5 assists against the Horned Frogs. He is averaging 10.2 points and 12.4 boards over his past five games. That’s useful when one of the big three — Joseph Girard III, PJ Hall, Chase Hunter — has an off day, as Hunter did against TCU.

Clemson returns to action this Saturday to face Memphis (7-2) at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.

North Carolina (No. 11) is the only other ACC team that is ranked in ESPN’s latest power rankings. Virginia is currently in what Borzello calls “the waiting room” to enter the rankings.
