Clemson opens the 2024 season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday, Aug. 31, against Georgia — the No. 1 team in Athlon’s Way-Too-Early Top 25.
With the 2023 college football season wrapping up with the national championship game on Monday night, a national outlet took an early look forward and predicted the top 25 teams for next season.
On Friday, Athlon Sports released its Way-Too-Early Top 25 for the 2024 season.
Clemson cracked the top 15, coming in at No. 13.
“With Florida State losing a big chunk of talent from the ACC Championship team from ’23, coach Dabo Swinney’s Tigers are likely to open ’24 as the favorite to win the conference,” Athlon’s Steven Lassan wrote. “After averaging only 23.6 points a contest in ACC play, Swinney hopes another offseason for quarterback Cade Klubnik under coordinator Garrett Riley will help to elevate the entire production of this group. Helping to ease the pressure on a developing offense is another standout defense in Death Valley. Linemen Peter Woods and TJ Parker and linebackers Wade Woodaz and Barrett Carter headline the top returners next season.”
After ending the 2023 campaign on a five-game winning streak, including the 38-35 victory over Kentucky in the Gator Bowl on Dec. 29, Clemson (9-4, 4-4 ACC) posted its 13th consecutive nine-win season and 14th overall in Swinney’s 15 full seasons as head coach.
The Tigers also extended their streak of at least one postseason win (conference championship, bowl game and/or national championship game) to 13 consecutive seasons, the longest streak on record in major college football history.
Clemson is the highest-ranked ACC team in the way-too-early rankings, followed by Florida State (No. 17), Louisville (No. 23) and NC State (No. 25).
Miami (No. 26), Virginia Tech (No. 28) and incoming ACC team SMU (No. 29) are in the next five outside of the top 25 in Athlon’s way-too-early rankings.
