Former Longtime Clemson Assistant Reportedly Heading to ACC School

A former longtime Clemson assistant coach is reportedly heading back to his alma mater.

Rick Stockstill is expected to join Florida State’s staff in an off-field role, according to FootballScoop.

Stockstill was fired by Middle Tennessee in late November following a 4-8 season in 2023. He spent 18 seasons as the Blue Raiders’ head coach, compiling a 113-111 record while winning one division title, a conference championship and leading his team to 10 bowl appearances.

Prior to being named the head coach at Middle Tennessee, Stockstill spent 23 years as an assistant coach at various programs, including South Carolina (wide receivers coach, 2004; tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator, 2005) and Clemson (1989 to 2002).

While on Clemson’s coaching staff, Stockstill served in a variety of capacities, working as recruiting coordinator, wide receivers coach, co-offensive coordinator, passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Stockstill is now reportedly set to return to Florida State, where he was a three-year letterman as a quarterback, team captain and earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in 1981 under Coach Bobby Bowden. Stockstill, who received his bachelor’s degree from FSU in 1982, made three bowl trips with the Seminoles and was inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 2019.
