After returning for his fifth and final season at Clemson in 2023, All-American and multi-time all-conference defensive tackle Tyler Davis is among this year’s group of Tigers awaiting their 2024 NFL Draft fate.
Ahead of April’s draft, ESPN NFL Draft analyst Jordan Reid weighed in on Davis during ACC Network’s ACC Huddle: NFL Draft Preview show.
“I like Tyler Davis quite a bit. He’s a little bit undersized, he has short arms, but you’re talking about somebody that can be disruptive on the interior of the defensive line,” said Reid, a former three-year starting quarterback at North Carolina Central University who went on to coach at his alma mater from 2014-18.
“There was a lot of people that thought he was going to declare for the draft last year. But alongside his teammate Ruke Orhorhoro, they ended up coming back for their senior seasons, which is something that we have seen, that has been accustomed with Clemson defensive linemen – whether it’s Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence or some of these other guys that we have seen come back for their senior seasons. Tyler Davis is that next guy in line.”
Davis made an immediate impact at Clemson, earning the starting role in his first career game as a true freshman in 2019 and becoming a key interior piece for Clemson’s defense thereafter.
The 6-foot-2, 300-pounder finished his Clemson career (2019-23) with 167 tackles (29.5 for loss), 16.0 sacks, four pass breakups and three fumble recoveries over 56 games (52 starts). In 2023, he posted 45 tackles (3.5 for loss) and a half-sack across 13 games.
A second-team All-American in 2022, Davis became Clemson’s first defensive player to be a four-time All-ACC selection, including three consecutive first-team honors from 2021-23. This past season, he broke Christian Wilkins’ school record for starts by a defensive tackle and went on to set the Clemson record for career starts by any defensive player (52).
When does Reid expect Davis to hear his name called in the 2024 NFL Draft?
“I think he’s going to go somewhere probably early Day 3,” Reid said, “and end up being a rotational player on the next level.”
The 2024 NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, with the first round taking place on April 25, followed by Rounds 2-3 on April 26 and Rounds 4-7 on April 27.
Davis is one of six former Clemson players who have been invited to the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, which will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis from February 26 through March 4.
