ESPN’s Dinich on Clemson’s Path to CFP, How It Can Impress Committee

After missing the four-team playoff in each of the last three seasons, Clemson is looking to make the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff in the upcoming 2024 campaign.

So, how can the Tigers make that happen and reach the CFP next season?

Heather Dinich, ESPN’s foremost CFP insider, recently broke down a possible path to the playoff (subscription required) for each team in ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top 25.

Clemson (9-4, 4-4 ACC in 2023) is No. 19 in that way-too-early ranking, and Dinich says the Tigers can impress the selection committee by beating both of their SEC opponents in 2024.

Clemson kicks off the season against Georgia in Atlanta on Aug. 31 before concluding the regular season with the annual rivalry showdown against South Carolina on Nov. 30.

“Even if Clemson were to finish as the ACC runner-up, that (going 2-0 against the SEC) should be enough for the Tigers to make a strong case for an at-large bid,” Dinich wrote.

Dinich also weighed in on whether Clemson’s path to the playoff will look different in the new 12-team format as opposed to the four-team format.

“When Clemson has the talent, it has the path, and that won’t change,” she wrote. “The Tigers have been to the four-team CFP 11 times — as many as Ohio State and trailing only Alabama (14). Clemson is 2-2 in four national championship game appearances. The CFP hasn’t been the obstacle recently. If Clemson can get back to the top of the ACC, it can get back to the playoff.”

Last week, the CFP Board of Managers confirmed the format for the 12-team playoff, which will include the five highest-ranked conference champions, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams as determined by the selection committee.
