Brownell: ‘There’s a Chance’ Clemson Star from March Returns

CLEMSON — There’s a possibility Clemson could return its star from March Madness.

Senior guard Chase Hunter has an extra year of eligibility and he’s set to test the waters with the pro process. Head coach Brad Brownell appeared on Road Rage with Walt Deptula on The Roar to talk about Hunter’s crucial decisions that approach.

“There’s no question he needs to put his name through the process and see what kind of feedback he gets. We’ll see what that is, support him in whatever he decides,” Brownell said.

Hunter has scored in the double digits while averaging over three assists in the last two seasons at Clemson. Nothing has compared to what he did in the Tigers’ Elite Eight run.

Named to the West All-Region Team, Hunter scored a season-high 21 in the first game against New Mexico and followed it with 20, 18 and 12-point performances. He managed to shoot exactly 50 percent during the tournament as well. The relentlessness at the rim was evident.

His playmaking and defense may have outshined has impressive shooting performances. Averaging 5.75 assists per games, Hunter facilitated at a high level and was tasked with defending the top guard on each opponent.

That run is why Hunter could take his game to the next level but Brownell said on the show there’s clear reason for him to return.

“I do think there’s a chance he comes back because we do have NIL and because this is a great place and if you’re not going to get drafted, you don’t necessarily have to just go do that and we’ll see,” Brownell said.

As the offseason gets into swing, Brownell said “it’s kind of hard” on these players going through these decisions. The 2024 NBA Draft Combine takes place May 12, and that could be the time for feedback and decision-making on Hunter’s return.
