Coming off his Pro Bowl season in 2022, Trevor Lawrence had a relatively down year by his standards in 2023 while battling and playing through multiple injuries over the course of the campaign, which ultimately saw the Jacksonville Jaguars miss the playoffs after losing five of their final six games.
But for those who say that the former Clemson star and 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick is a “bust”?
Kay Adams says she isn’t buying that nonsense about Lawrence, and the NFL show host/personality explained why recently on her Up & Adams show.
“I’m not going to be fooled into accepting any of this ‘Trevor Lawrence is a bust’ BS that’s been going on after the Jags’ late-season collapse… by the way, further fueled by the Mac Jones trade (from the Patriots to the Jaguars),” Adams said.
“I’m not trying to make excuses for Trevor. I’ve met him, like him quite a bit. But objectively… the struggles for Trevor were so much about the injuries so much more than anything else. He had a knee sprain in Week 6… Week 13 he sprains his ankle, concussion in Week 15, an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder to top it off in Week 16.”
Despite being banged up quite a bit last season, Lawrence played in all but one game and completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 4,016 yards and 21 touchdowns with 14 interceptions.
Adams brought up a graphic showing the disparity in Lawrence’s numbers before and after his injuries.
From Weeks 1-13, Lawrence led the Jags to an 8-4 record while completing 67.9 percent of his passes, posting a 94.4 passer rating and accounting for 18 total touchdowns with seven interceptions.
From Weeks 14-18, when Lawrence dealt with an ankle injury, concussion and shoulder injury, he had a 60.0 completion percentage, 74.2 passer rating and seven total touchdowns with seven interceptions as the Jags went 0-4 in his four starts during that span.
“Before the ankle sprain on Monday Night (against the Bengals)… he was dealing and had the Jags in prime position for another playoff appearance,” Adams said. “Once the injuries started, his completion percentage plummeted, the passer rating fell off by 20 points, and the Jags couldn’t win a game.”
Over his first three NFL seasons, Lawrence has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 11,770 yards and 58 touchdowns with 39 interceptions in 50 career starts. During his Pro Bowl 2022 campaign, he ranked among the top 10 in the league in completions (387), passing yards (4,113), passing touchdowns (25) and passer rating (95.2).
With better health, Adams is confident that Lawrence will bounce back in 2024.
“If the Jags can keep him clean this season, I fully expect a bounceback year from him,” she said. “I’m gonna let the fools keep talking doom and gloom.”
