Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry met with the media Thursday and gave an injury update on Deshaun Watson.
The former Clemson quarterback continues to work his way back after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury last season.
Recent updates regarding Watson’s rehab have been optimistic, and Berry said Thursday that the Browns still expect Watson to be ready for the team’s 2024 season opener.
“We feel really good about it,” Berry said. “I’m not going to make any predictions… just because like, you just never know. But that’s certainly our expectation.”
Watson had surgery back on Nov. 21 to repair a displaced fracture to the glenoid in his right (throwing) shoulder. He sustained the injury in Cleveland’s Week 10 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
The three-time Pro Bowler recently started throwing again and has been at the Browns’ offseason workouts this week.
“This week Deshaun was throwing up to 40 yards,” Berry said. “He’s in a pretty good spot. Again, I don’t want to put the cart before the horse, but he’s progressing as appropriate. We’re really, really pleased with the work that he’s put in and really pleased with how his shoulder’s responding, but we’re still in the rehab process. So, we know that it could take different left and right turns, but we’re pretty optimistic in terms of what we’ve seen so far.”
Prior to the season-ending injury, Watson completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 1,115 yards and seven touchdowns with four interceptions across six games in 2023.
Watson is entering his third year with the Browns in 2024. He has passed for 16,756 yards and 118 touchdowns with 45 interceptions in 66 career games with the Browns and Texans since being taken by Houston in the first round (12th overall) of the 2017 draft.
