Browns GM Discusses Expectations for Watson in 2024

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry joined The Pat McAfee Show this week and spoke about his expectations for Deshaun Watson and the Browns’ offense this season.

Although the former Clemson star quarterback is coming off a season-ending shoulder injury in 2023, Berry has high expectations for Watson heading into the upcoming campaign.

“He’s in a really good spot mentally, physically. Obviously he’s been rehabbing the shoulder injury, but he’s well on his way there and in a really, really strong spot,” Berry said.

“I think he’s a lot more comfortable within the organization. We have a core group of guys on offense that have now played together for a number of years, and we do expect to hit the ground running on that side of the ball. I know he’s very excited about returning to the playing field and getting over this injury, and we do have high expectations for him and the offense this season.”

A three-time Pro Bowler, Watson is entering his third year with the Browns in 2024 after being traded to Cleveland from the Houston Texans in March 2022 and then signing a new fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract with the Browns.

Watson had surgery back on Nov. 21 to repair a displaced fracture to the glenoid in his right (throwing) shoulder. He sustained the injury in Cleveland’s Week 10 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Prior to the injury, Watson completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 1,115 yards and seven touchdowns with four interceptions across six games in 2023.

The Browns have said they expect Watson to be ready for the team’s 2024 season opener, and Berry believes “a big year” is in store for Watson.

“Players who are coming back from serious injuries, I don’t think it’s uncommon for there to be some transition or acclimation. That has to be in the realm of possibility,” Berry said. “But we still feel really good about Deshaun. We like the trajectory that we’ve seen, and we really do think that he’s going to have a big year.”

Watson has passed for 16,756 yards and 118 touchdowns with 45 interceptions in 66 career games with the Browns and Texans since being taken by Houston in the first round (12th overall) of the 2017 draft.
