Brad Brownell has gone out in the transfer portal and landed three key pieces. There’s one more addition that may have been forgotten.
Before the 2023-24 season, Clemson landed Air Force transfer Jake Heidbreder. He redshirted last season but he’ll be back to boost the backcourt for the Tigers.
Over his two seasons for the Falcons, Heidbreder was a prolific scorer in double digits. As a sophomore, he averaged 15.1 points on 48.8/39.9/86.7 splits.
That’s the kind of boost Clemson will get, but his role on the team is still up in the air. Chase Hunter has yet to make a decision on his future as he tests the NBA waters but Brownell said he expects him to return for his final season of eligibility.
Should that be the choice, Heidbreder will likely be a third piece in a small lineup or the sixth man and key scorer of the bench. He stands at 6-foot-5 so he has the potential to play in a smaller lineup.
That’s not something that the Tigers went to often last season as the three spot was handled by Jack Clark, Chauncey Wiggins and RJ Godfrey. This could be another prolific scoring team for Brownell and Heidbreder is a big factor in that.
Having the trio of Hunter, Heidbreder and Jaeden Zackery in the backcourt gives Clemson a lot of confidence. Adding Viktor Lakhin and Christian Reeves up front doesn’t hurt either.
The bar is set high after the Elite Eight run but the Tigers have the tools to do it again in 2024-25.
