If I read this right, CBS Sports believes Dabo Swinney is not on the hot seat at Clemson, but his seat is getting warm.
If I could, I would insert the laughing-out-loud emoji here.
On Tuesday, CBS Sports.com released its hot seat rating for every head coach in the FBS. Swinney was given a “2” on their chart, which means “All good… for now”. Swinney’s rating went from a “0” to “2”. An “0” means “untouchable”.
What that tells me is CBS Sports actually thinks if Clemson does not make the College Football Playoff this season, Swinney will be on the hot seat next year.
That is laughable. They have Mike Norvell at Florida State as “untouchable” and not Swinney. (insert thinking emoji here).
Let me get this straight. One guy has won 80 percent of his 213 games in 16 years at his school, including two national championships and eight conference championships. By the way, he has won 30 games in the last three seasons.
The other guy has won 65 percent of his 48 games in five years at his school, including one conference championship. By the way, he has won 28 games in the last three years.
Of these two guys above, which one do you think could get on the hot seat first?
It’s ridiculous, right?
I know it’s “List Season” and guys like Dennis Dodd have to have something to write about. However, it’s obvious some of these national guys have no idea what the pulse at Clemson is.
Yes. The fans are frustrated with the results of the last three years. And yes, they would love to see Dabo Swinney go to the transfer portal and pull out an all-conference player.
However, Clemson football fans are smarter than Dodd gives them credit for here.
They appreciate what Dabo Swinney built at Clemson. With all the success Clemson has had in its storied program, no one has done it better than Swinney.
You do not fire a guy that has 170 wins and just 43 losses. You do not fire a guy that went to six straight CFP’s when only four teams got to go. You do not fire a guy who played for the national championship four times in five years. You do not fire a guy that has eight conference championships.
This is a classic example of where the national media is looking for Clemson to fail. They are so hungry to write off Dabo Swinney and Clemson, it is not even funny.
They long for the days when Clemson could not get out if its own way and they could use Clemson as a verb.
Personally, I have nothing against Norvell or the FSU program—other than cancelling the 2020 Clemson game for no reason three hours before kickoff in 2020 and I was five minutes from the press box.
However, though Clemson has slipped a little from a national standpoint, it does not mean Clemson is done.
Remember when the national media said Nick Saban and Alabama were done before the 2020 season? What happened after that, the Crimson Tide won another national championship in 2020, played for it again in 2021 and went to the 4-team playoff in 2023.
I an not saying Clemson is going to win a national championship or anything, but I can tell you this much. Dabo Swinney is not done at Clemson, and he definitely will not be on any hotseat. That would be ridiculous.
