Clemson’s true freshmen wideouts put on a show and had their collective coming-out party Saturday night in the 25th-ranked Tigers’ 66-20 victory over App State at Death Valley.
Clemson’s offense exploded for eight touchdowns in the first half, and both of the Tigers’ first-year wide receivers – Bryant Wesco and T.J. Moore – got in on the fun, with each scoring their first career touchdown.
It didn’t take Wesco, a former top-30 national recruit from Texas, long to get the party started.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder got wide open over the middle of the field and hauled in a 76-yard touchdown catch on quarterback Cade Klubnik’s second pass of the game, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead just a minute and 14 seconds into the game.
Wesco wasn’t done after that, as he continued his huge first quarter with another big-time play on Clemson’s second possession, recording a 51-yard reception that put the Tigers at the 2-yard line and set up Klubnik’s touchdown run on the ensuing play.
After playing only 12 snaps in the season-opener against Georgia, Wesco went off for three catches, 130 yards and his touchdown in a little more than five minutes of game action against App State.
Meanwhile, Moore made his presence felt against the Mountaineers as well.
The former five-star prospect from Florida flashed his potential while posting three catches for 44 yards and his first career touchdown. That touchdown came in the second quarter when Klubnik found Moore over the middle, and the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder glided into the end zone for a 33-yard score.
Overall, Moore and Wesco combined for six catches, 174 yards and the pair of touchdowns.
After the freshmen tandem saw limited playing time against Georgia, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said “you’ll continue to see those guys stepping up and getting more opportunity” as this season goes along.
It’s safe to say Clemson fans saw Wesco and Moore step up and take advantage of their opportunities Saturday night. They gave a glimpse of what the future holds for them, and that future certainly looks bright.
