CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney updated the injury status of linebacker Kobe McCloud following the 25th-ranked Tigers’ 66-20 win over Appalachian State Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
“Kobe got banged up,” Swinney said. “Hopefully, it is not too bad. We will see where he is tomorrow.”
McCloud got injured in the second half and went into the locker room before coming back on the field on crutches. He sat most of the second half on the bench nursing his injury.
With McCloud out, freshman Sammy Brown took advantage of the extra snaps, as he led the Tigers with nine tackles, including seven solo tackles.
“He was flying around,” Swinney said of Brown’s performance. “You notice him a little more because he is a blur out there. He is physical… But it was great to see Sammy get out there.”
Brown was a coveted prospect coming out of high school at Jefferson High School in Commerce, Ga. The former five-star was a consensus top 30 player nationally according to 247Sports, ESPN, On3, Rivals and PrepStar. He was named the nation’s top all-around athlete by MaxPreps for his success in football, wrestling and track, joining a list of previous award-winners that includes Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray and Derrick Henry.
He was named as the No. 1 “Freak Athlete” in the nation by 247Sports and received the 2023 High School Butkus Award, presented each year to the top high school linebacker in the nation.
“He is growing his confidence and he is really taking pride in special teams,” Swinney said. “There is a lot to be excited about with him.”
