Swinney on Whether or Not Tigers Still Plan to Take a QB in 2025

With Clemson losing its lone quarterback recruit of the 2025 class in Blake Hebert on Monday, the question becomes what is the plan to replace him.

The Tigers did not take a player at the position in 2024, so not taking one in the current class would mean not signing a quarterback out of high school in back-to-back classes.

Dabo Swinney was asked about the situation moving forward on Tuesday during his weekly press conference and the head coach insisted the plan was to still sign a quarterback as part of the 2025 class.

At the same time, Swinney also went on to say that the program is on solid footing with the three they currently have on the roster which includes junior Cade Klubnik and underclassmen Chris Vizzina and Trent Pearman.

“We try and take a quarterback every year,” Swinney said.

“We love the three quarterbacks we have. They are pretty good. Very few people have three quarterbacks they can win with. If you’ve got three quarterbacks today that you can win with you’re in good shape.”

Swinney reiterated that not taking one in the last recruiting cycle became part of the plan after landing Vizzina in the 2023 class. Vizzina redshirted last season, which means he still has three more years of eligibility after this season.

“We didn’t take one in ’24 because that was our plan with CV, that was just executing the plan that we put in place,” Swinney added. “That’s part of how we got him. We beat a lot of people to get CV and that was part it. He was 17. Hey, here’s kind of the plan, and it’s kind of working out really good. He’s a very good player. And gonna be really good I think.”

Despite the loss of Hebert on Monday, Swinney still expects a quarterback to be taken in the 2025 class. He just isn’t quite sure how the Tigers get there just yet. The staff could always target another high school prospect or take the portal route, just as they did with Paul Tyson, who was signed as part of the 2023 class.

“We’d love to get a guy. We will definitely probably take a quarterback in the 25 class of some sort,” Swinney said. “Right now, we got Paul Tyson as our fourth guy. Love Paul Tyson. So is it a Paul Tyson type of guy or a high school kid? I don’t know how that all plays out.”
