CLEMSON — Former wide receiver Sammy Watkins will be inducted into Clemson’s Athletic Hall of Fame when the 11th-ranked Tigers host Louisville Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Watkins is arguably the greatest wide receiver in Clemson’s rich football history. Imagine if the former NFL star becomes a coach at Clemson.
Head coach Dabo Swinney says that might be something that is in play.
“We talked about timing,” the Clemson coach said Tuesday during his weekly press conference at the Smart Family Media Center. “His kids are athletes. He has some competitive athletes. He has a lot going on there.
“So, he does want to finish school at some point, so we are trying to get him to come back and help us out and finish up. So, we will see.”
Watkins’ ended his Clemson career with 240 career receptions for a still Clemson record 3,391 yards and 27 touchdowns. He was also a three-time first-team All-American.
In his last game, Watkins had a school-record 16 receptions for a school-record 227 yards and two touchdowns in the 2014 Orange Bowl victory over Ohio State. His 16 catches and 227 yards were also an Orange Bowl record, as he was named the game’s MVP.
In the NFL, Watkins spent nine years in the league before retiring in 2022. He was selected No. 4 overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2014 NFL Draft.
He finished his career with 364 receptions for 5,384 yards and 34 touchdowns. The highlight of his professional career came in Super Bowl LIV when he caught five passes for 98 yards, including a 38-yard game-winning catch in the Chiefs’ 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
