The first rankings of the 12-team College Football Playoff era have been released.
On Tuesday night, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee’s first CFP Top 25 rankings of the 2024 season were unveiled.
Clemson (6-2, 5-1 ACC) checked in at No. 23 in the initial CFP rankings reveal of 2024.
Tonight marked the first of six weekly playoff rankings shows televised on ESPN throughout this season. The CFP Top 25 announcements will go through the sixth and final reveal on Selection Day (Sunday, Dec. 8).
Of course, this is the inaugural season of the 12-team playoff format, which features the five highest-ranked conference champions, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams as determined by the CFP Selection Committee.
The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye, while teams seeded five through 12 will play each other in the first round on the home field of the higher-ranked team.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played in the New Year’s Six bowl games, and the national championship game will continue to be at a neutral site.
Clemson — after seeing its ACC Championship and playoff hopes take a serious hit with last Saturday’s upset loss to Louisville — will travel to play Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va., on Saturday (3:30 p.m., ESPN).
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said during his weekly press conference Tuesday that his focus is on trying to beat Virginia Tech, and he wouldn’t be tuning in to the CFP rankings show.
“I’m sure I’ll hear about it, but I’m not tuned in or sitting there waiting. I’m trying to find a way to beat Virginia Tech. That’s all I’m worried about,” Swinney said.
“As y’all all know, a lot can happen in college football, right. Just when you think you know, you don’t know. … You just never know. You just keep going. A lot can happen in college football. I’m not worried about any rankings. I haven’t been worried about any rankings. I’m just worried about trying to win the game that we got in front of us, and go from there.”
