Swinney Explains How Woods Got Hurt in Louisville Game

Clemson lost star defensive lineman Peter Woods to an injury during last Saturday’s loss to Louisville at Death Valley.

Woods was taken to the locker room in the second quarter and later came out of the locker room without his helmet on.

On Wednesday evening, in his final media availability of the week ahead of Saturday’s game at Virginia Tech, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked if he knew when and where Woods sustained his injury in the Louisville game.

“Yep, I know exactly where it was,” Swinney said.

Swinney then explained that Woods got hurt when he was hit in the head by a Louisville player on a kickout block.

Woods “didn’t feel right” after that, according to Swinney, who called the aforementioned play “dangerous.”

“It was a kickout block, and the guy kind of hit him with the top of his head. Really kind of dangerous on the guy that hit him, actually,” Swinney said. “Kind of hit him kind of high. He tried to kind of keep going a little bit, but it just didn’t feel right.”

“The kid that hit him just kind of lowered his head and hit him in a bad spot,” Swinney added.

Woods didn’t come back into the game after getting injured. Swinney said Wednesday evening that he is “progressing pretty good” and remains day-to-day entering Saturday’s game against Virginia Tech at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va. (3:30 p.m., ESPN).

As a sophomore this season, Woods has tallied 14 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. The 6-foot-3, 315-pounder missed time earlier this season with a leg injury after getting chop-blocked and injured during the Appalachian State game on Sept. 7.

A former five-star prospect, Woods was a freshman All-American in 2023, when he posted 27 tackles (2.5 for loss) and a forced fumble in 307 snaps over 12 games (two starts). He was also credited with 10 quarterback pressures.
