Will Sammy Brown Start at Pitt?

CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney broke down Pitt’s offense during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

In doing so, Swinney left the door open on whether linebacker Sammy Brown will get his second start on Saturday when the 17th-ranked Tigers visit Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa.

“It is based on what they do. They are an eleven personnel team. They have very few snaps with twelve. It is almost all eleven personnel,” Swinney said. “We will see how its situationally.

“He certainly will have an opportunity to play. He has earned that and he will continue to do that, but we have created some great depth there.”

Eleven personnel means one running back and one tight end formations. Virginia Tech, Clemson’s opponent last week, was more of a 12-personnel offense (one running back and two tight ends). It was a situation that allowed the Tigers to play more of their 4-3 base defense.

Playing a team like the Panthers (7-2, 3-2 ACC) means the Tigers could deploy a more 4-2-5 scheme, which can leave Brown off the field at times. In Clemson’s 4-3 scheme, Brown is Clemson’s starting linebacker, while Wade Woodaz starts at strong side and Barrett Carter starts on the weakside.

In the 4-2-5, Woodaz moves into the middle and Carter stays as the weakside backer, but Brown goes out so Clemson can get an extra defensive back on the field.

After getting his first start at Virginia Tech, Brown used the opportunity to record a team-best 8 tackles to go along with 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. His performance earned him ACC Linebacker and Rookie of the Week honors.
