Swinney gives Latest Injury Update on Safety R.J. Mickens

CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave the latest injury update on Clemson safety R.J. Mickens during his weekly press conference on Tuesday at the Smart Family Media Center.

Mickens was injured early in the fourth quarter of the Tigers’ win at Pittsburgh this past Saturday and he did not return.

On Sunday, Swinney said Mickens was banged up and will be day-to-day. He was asked Tuesday if the graduate safety was at practice on Monday.

“He is limited. But he is out there,” Swinney said.

Mickens has been a staple on the backend of the Clemson defense and despite leaving early was second on team with 10 tackles against the Panthers. he also added 2.5 tackles for loss and had one pass breakup.

“Really proud of him,” Swinney said. “He’s playing outstanding. He had some great extra-effort plays. He’s playing really smart, is where he’s supposed to be. He’s making a lot of tackles. I think that’s his most production points that he’s had.”

For the season, Mickens has 53 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and one interception.

“But he’s a little banged up right now,” Swinney said. “Hopefully he’ll bounce back quick.”
