CLEMSON — Clemson’s offense is not where it wants to be at the end of the year, but head coach Dabo Swinney has been pleased with where it is heading into Saturday’s game against The Citadel.
Currently, the Tigers rank 10th nationally in total offense (460.7 ypg) and 14th in scoring offense (36.3 ppg).
“He has done a heck of a job. We are much improved,” Swinney said.
The improvements do not stop there. The offense ranks 22nd nationally in explosive plays of 20 yards or more (55), including 14 plays over 40 yards.
“There is plenty we can still do better. Obviously, we have had a couple of slow starts in a couple of games down the stretch here where we are just not finishing some drives, missing some plays and mistakes along the way, but Garrett has done a great job,” Swinney said. “The staff has really been awesome. I am really pleased with our staff and the work they have put in. It has been really good, and Garrett has a great feel for Clemson, our structure and everything that we do, and obviously the personnel and our players.”
Riley has also helped with the way quarterback Cade Klubnik has improved this season. The junior is tied for 4th nationally in TD passes (26) and 20th in passing yards (2,563).
Klubnik’s 31 total touchdowns also rank among the nation’s best and he is second to Miami’s Cam Ward (34) in the ACC.
“[Riley] has put them in position to be successful. He has certainly had some calls, and he would be the first to tell you, he would like to have back,” Swinney said. “We are much improved from where we were last year, but we still got work to do.
“We got an opportunity to finish strong this year and again, we have a chance to keep building. We got a lot back next year, a lot.”
The Tigers (8-2) host The Citadel this Saturday (3:30 p.m., CW) before playing No.18 South Carolina on Nov. 30 at Memorial Stadium in the regular season-finale.
