During Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney’s weekly Tuesday press conference, Director of Broadcasting for Clemson Athletics and Clemson Football play-by-play voice Don Munson said to Swinney that “there is a possibility you could win Saturday and still not make the playoff.”
“No, that’s not possible,” Swinney said. “That’s not possible.”
“What are you drinking?” Swinney added jokingly.
Of course, Swinney is correct.
If Clemson (9-3) beats SMU (11-1) in Saturday’s ACC Championship Game, the Tigers will earn an automatic bid to the new 12-team College Football Playoff as one of the five highest-ranked conference champions.
Only the four highest-ranked conference champions will receive first-round byes, so while Clemson will automatically make the playoff with a win Saturday, the Tigers will have to play a first-round matchup if they aren’t one of the four highest-ranked champions in the College Football Playoff Selection Committee’s final CFP Top 25 rankings on Selection Day (Sunday, Dec. 8).
“So what, who cares? Let’s go! Hey, sign me up. I don’t care. Let’s go! Where we going? Where we going?” Swinney said with a big smile.
The ACC title game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., is set to kick off at 8 p.m. and will be televised on ABC.
“We control our destiny,” Swinney said. “We win, we’re in. SMU wins, they’re in. I think they should be in no matter what. But gotta go play the game, see what happens.”
