Turns Out Swinney Not Quite Done in Transfer Portal

Maybe Clemson isn’t quite done in the transfer portal after all.

Dabo Swinney has already added two transfers at positions of need, signing Purdue DE Will Heldt and SE Missouri State WR Tristan Smith. After those two additions, many thought the Tigers might be done in the portal, at least until the spring window.

Turns out, that might not be the case. On Saturday, The Clemson Insider confirmed that Alabama transfer Jeremiah Alexander will visit on Tuesday. If that name sounds familiar, that’s because the Tigers recruited the former 5-star hard coming out of high school.

In fact, Alexander visited Clemson in the summer of 2021, with the Tigers looking like they just might land him. Not long after that visit, Alexander would suddenly commit to Alabama, where he has spent the past three seasons.

While the Tigers recruited Alexander as an edge rusher, he played linebacker in the Alabama defensive scheme. The Tide had him at inside linebacker to start his career, before moving him outside ahead of the 2023 season.

Alexander didn’t see the field much while with the Tide, outside of playing on special teams. He logged just nine tackles over his first three years.  However, judging him based on those statistics alone might be short-sighted. He’s still a player with a ton of upside.

Coming out of high school as a member of the 2022 recruiting class, Alexander was considered the nation’s top edge rusher and was ranked No. 18 overall in the 247 Composite Rankings.

Maybe he’s a late-bloomer. Maybe he just wasn’t the best fit for the defensive scheme at Alabama. Or maybe, he’s a player that will benefit from nothing more than a change of scenery and an opportunity somewhere else.

Regardless, considering the history, Alexander is too talented of a player to not at least take a run at. Whether Clemson prefers him as an end or linebacker is yet to be determined. Some of that might depend on who the next defensive coordinator is. The Tigers still have potential needs at both spots seeing as DE AJ Hoffler is transferring to Georgia Tech and there are still some unknowns at linebacker behind Wade Woodaz and Sammy Brown.

First things first though, the Tigers have to land him. Alexander visited Auburn on Saturday and is expected to take visits to Ole Miss and Oklahoma on top of the one to Clemson.

No matter where he ends up, one thing is certain. Swinney is still open to adding at least one more piece to his defense via the transfer portal.
