Hunter, Lakhin Lead Clemson to Upset win over No. 2 Duke

CLEMSON — Chase Hunter made four free throws in the final 14 seconds, plus blocked Tyrese Proctor’s shot on the defensive end to seal Clemson’s 77-71 upset of No. 2 Duke Saturday at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Hunter scored six of the Tigers’ final seven points and finished the night with 14. Center Viktor Lakhin led Clemson with 22 points on 9 of 12 shooting, while Ian Schieffelin produced another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Jaeden Zackery also scored 12 points for the Tigers on 5 of 9 shooting.

Duke (20-3, 12-1 ACC) was led by Proctor’s 23 points. Freshman sensation Cooper Flagg scored 18 points with 14 of those coming after halftime, 12 in the final six minutes of the game.

Flagg gave the Blue Devils a 71-70 lead with 58 seconds to play thanks to a wide open three-pointer from the wing. But Hunter put the Tigers back in front for good, 72-71, with 38 seconds to go on a driving layup.

Clemson (19-5, 11-2 ACC) did not take its first lead in the game until the 12:23 mark of the second half when Hunter drove the ball off the right side for a layup. His basket gave the Tigers a 51-49 advantage.

On the previous possession, Schieffelin drained a three from the top of the key that tied the game at 49 with 13:16 to go.

The Tigers extended their lead to seven points, 56-49, as part of 12-0 run during a 4:31 stretch. Duke was 0-for-6 from the field during the run.

However, Clemson wasted several opportunities to extend its lead. Lakhin missed a wide open layup that could have given them a nine-point advantage. Del Jones then missed a wide open jumper on the next possession.

Though Duke was just 1-for-9 from the field during the stretch, the Tigers’ missed shots allowed the Blue Devils to stay within striking distance. They finally tied the game, 59-58, for just the second time when Flagg hit a wide open three-pointer with 5:16 to go.

After Lakhin connected on a fadeaway, Proctor nailed a three-point in the corner, despite two Clemson defenders draped all over him. The three gave Duke a 62-61 lead with 4:05 to play.

With 1:15 to go, Schieffelin went to the foul line with a chance to extend the Tigers lead to four points. However, he missed both free throws and Duke took advantage as Flagg knocked down a wide open triple from the left wing for a 71-70 lead with 58 seconds to go.

Hunter, however, gave Clemson back the lead with a driving layup with 38 seconds remaining. Lakin then connected on one of two foul shots for a 73-71 lead with 21 seconds remaining.

Though the Tigers came into the game ranked second in the ACC in team free throw shooting, they struggled at the line, connecting on 13 of 22 foul shots.

But Hunter made up for it in the end.

With 14 seconds to play, Flagg tried to win the game for the Blue Devils, but he slipped as he went up for the shot and never got the shot off. Hunter then went to the foul and made both free throws to extend the Clemson to four.

As Duke tried desperately to extend the game, Hunter blocked Proctor’s attempt on the other end to seal the victory with five seconds left.
