MLB Tiger to Miss Significant Time with Injury

A former Clemson standout in the major leagues is set to miss significant time with an injury.

Weston Wilson, a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, will be sidelined for six weeks with an oblique injury.

The former Tiger suffered a moderate oblique strain this past weekend while hitting in the batting cage.

Wilson came into spring training with a good chance to earn a spot on the Phillies’ bench, but unfortunately, his injury removes him from the mix for an Opening Day roster spot.

“Wes Wilson’s a great guy,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said, via MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. “Everybody loves him. He’s a great teammate. It’s very sad for all of us, including him, of course.”

Wilson was drafted in the 17th round (No. 501 overall pick) of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers and signed that June. The Phillies later signed him as a free agent in January 2023.

The 30-year-old utility man has taken advantage of limited opportunities in the big leagues, posting an impressive slash line of .288/.375/.490 with four home runs, seven doubles, one triple, 12 RBI, 18 runs scored and six stolen bases across 49 games in his MLB career, all with the Phillies.

Wilson made his MLB debut in August 2023, when he homered in his first career plate appearance, and he finished the 2023 season with a .313 average, the homer, two RBI, five runs scored and three steals over eight games.

Wilson performed well again during the 2024 season, when he hit .284 with three homers, 10 RBI, 13 runs scored and three stolen bases across 41 games.

Last season, on Aug. 15, Wilson made history by hitting for the cycle in the Phillies’ 13-3 win over the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. He achieved just the 10th cycle in Phillies history and became the ninth Phillie player to hit for the cycle, as Chuck Klein did it two times, while Wilson also became the first rookie in Phillies history to hit for the cycle.

At Clemson, Wilson was a career .260 hitter with a .330 on-base percentage in 175 games (164 starts) over three seasons from 2014-16. The High Point, N.C., native had 26 doubles, four triples, 14 homers, 94 RBIs, 95 runs, 62 walks, five hit-by-pitches and 18 steals.
