Highly-Rated LB Says Tom Allen Will ‘Coach You Like a Man’

Max Brown has made countless visits to Clemson over the past year and a half.

With older brother Sammy now a rising sophomore for the Tigers, Brown has been making stops at Clemson, dating back to when his older brother first started going through the recruiting process.

However, the younger Brown is starting to make his own name. He has become one of the more highly rated recruits in the 2027 recruiting class, with Rivals ranking him inside of the Top 50 overall and No. 2 among all linebackers.

The 6-foot-1, 214-pound prospect already holds more than a dozen offers, including Ohio State, Auburn, Louisville, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

Brown was back on campus on Saturday for the Underclass Experience, and then one day later, he was winning an MVP award at The Opening All22 camp.

“It’s really like a blessing,” Brown told The Clemson Insider about winning MVP honors. “It’s great seeing everything I’ve worked for over the past year and a half start coming together. I want to never get to fooling myself or get too comfortable because there’s always stuff that can be worked on. There’s always stuff that can be critiqued and all that. So I made sure I asked the coach, ‘What do you think I could improve on?’ Made sure to take note of that and took really good note of his coaching and his tips and all that good stuff.”

As for the visit to Clemson, Brown experienced much of what he has on every other visit to Clemson, but with one glaring difference. Watching new defensive coordinator Tom Allen and new linebackers coach Ben Boulware in action really hit the mark.

“It was really just the same old, great Clemson, except the staff changes,” Brown said. “It was good seeing coach Boulware and how he actually coaches linebackers and how coach Allen coaches the defense. I love the way that they coach. They’re keeping it real with you, coaching you like a man, which I love. I love the energy that they bring. And they’re always going be in it for the best reasons. They’re just all great men up there.”

Since Allen was hired away from Penn State in January, Brown has started to develop a bond with the Tigers’ new assistant.

“He’s really smart,” Brown added. “He has really good football knowledge, and he’s a really great guy. He gets after it. His voice was completely gone by the time practice was done. He gets after you, but he’s really big on tough love. With Clemson, it’s what are you doing, how are you doing it and why do you do it. I really like the way that they put things like that. Make sure everything has intent, everything has purpose, and everything that they say they have something to relate back to scripture within the Bible.”

When Clemson starts handing out offers to players in the 2027 class this summer, it’s a safe bet that Brown is one of the first calls that go out. And it’s a phone call that he’s been looking forward to getting for quite some time now.

“They’re not only going to make you a better football player, they’re gonna make you a better man,” Brown said. “They’re gonna make you a better husband one day; a better worker. Just prepare you for all skills of life. They make sure you focus on school. And then Clemson has won a lot of championships, whether it be conference or national.”
