Swinney Talks Different Spring Game Format, Decision Not to Televise It

Clemson’s annual Orange vs. White Spring Game will be different this year.

Instead of having both offensive and defensive players on each team, the Tigers will have the whole offense on one team (wearing orange) and the defense on the other team (wearing white).

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney discussed the new spring game format during an interview on ACC Network’s ACC PM show this week, saying the Tigers are doing it differently due to injuries.

“We usually always split the team as evenly as possible,” Swinney said. “But we have so many guys out this year, it’s hard for us to have the offense on two different sidelines because of the way we’d have to sub. So, we’re going to play offense vs. defense, good-on-good. Everybody’s playing, and we’re going to play ball. So, we’re going to continue to get better.”

Another different aspect of Saturday’s spring game is that it will feature a scoring system.

It’s what you’d expect for the offense – two points for a two-point conversion, three points for a field goal and seven points for a touchdown plus PAT.

Meanwhile, the defense can score by getting a three-and-out (one point), missed PAT (one point), two-point conversion stop (two points), safety (two points), takeaway (three points), fourth-down stop (three points), missed field goal (three points) and defensive touchdown plus PAT (seven points).

“We’ve got a points system on how we score it, offense vs. defense, but it’s going to be a blast,” Swinney said.

The Orange vs. White Spring Game at Memorial Stadium is set to kick off at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Clemson decided not to televise the spring game this year.

“It’s not on TV this year, and that was a decision that we made,” Swinney said. “The biggest thing was, we always have a good crowd, but hopefully this will bring even more people out because they can’t just sit at home and watch. They’ve got to come see for themself.”

Admission is free. Gates will open at 11:30 a.m.

“It’s a great opportunity – it’s our only opportunity to create a gameday feel for these guys before we play LSU at the end of August. There’s no other opportunity,” Swinney said.

“So, it’s going to be a great day. It’s a great time for our fans. It’s a free opportunity to come see the Tigers, and it’s going to be fun.”
